Tonno Rosso d'Italia registers EU collective trademark
The Italian producer organization Tonno Rosso d'Italia has successfully registered a collective trademark across the European Union. Established in late 2022, the organization aims to create a strategic national supply chain for bluefin tuna, managing the product from capture to consumption to ensure quality, traceability, and sustainability.
Currently, the organization represents approximately 13% of Italy's national bluefin tuna catch quota for 2026 and half of the quota allocated to fixed tuna fisheries. Its operations include 17 vessels and a fixed tuna fishery located on the island of San Pietro near Carloforte. The initiative seeks to increase the value retained within Italy by modernizing the sector, exemplified by the launch of the technologically advanced vessel SalvatoreP in early 2026.
Parallel to industrial developments, scientific research continues to highlight the health benefits of tuna consumption. Studies, including those from the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research, suggest that consuming two portions of canned fish per week may reduce the risk of certain cancers and cardiovascular diseases due to high Omega-3 fatty acid content. These fatty acids are linked to reduced inflammation and cellular aging.
