Tony biopic follows young Anthony Bourdain in Provincetown
The A24 film 'Tony' is a biopic centered on the early life of chef Anthony Bourdain. Set in the summer of 1975 in Provincetown, Massachusetts, the story follows a 19-year-old Bourdain as he works as a dishwasher in a seafood establishment.
Directed by Matt Johnson, the film is loosely inspired by the opening chapters of Bourdain’s memoir, 'Kitchen Confidential'. Dominic Sessa portrays the young Bourdain, while Antonio Banderas plays a chef character. During production, Sessa reportedly found the recurring gag of having cold water dumped on him to be a difficult and repetitive task, requiring him to remain in a state of deep relaxation to simulate sleep.
The production utilized real locations in the Cape Cod area to reflect the geography of Bourdain’s early career.
