Tony Blair warns leaders to resist AI techlash
Tony Blair has warned political leaders in the United Kingdom and the United States against succumbing to a growing “techlash” regarding artificial intelligence. In a report published by the Tony Blair Institute, Blair argued that slowing the adoption of AI could result in significant long-term costs for national security and economic growth.
The warning comes amid conflicting views within the industry. While some leaders at Anthropic and OpenAI have supported calls to pace development, and former researchers have raised concerns about safety, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has dismissed extinction predictions, advocating for rapid development.
The Tony Blair Institute suggests that instead of restricting technology due to public anxiety, governments should implement a robust system of independent testing and assurance while overhauling government structures to better utilize AI.
