Tony Elumelu sparks debate after correcting trainee's informal address

A viral interaction between United Bank for Africa (UBA) Chairman Tony Elumelu and a female graduate trainee has sparked a widespread debate regarding workplace etiquette, hierarchy, and cultural respect in Nigeria.

During a graduation ceremony for UBA’s Graduate Management Accelerated Programme, the trainee addressed Elumelu as ‘Tony.’ Elumelu corrected her, stating he does not subscribe to ‘Oyinbo life’ and requested she use formal titles such as ‘Mr. Elumelu,’ ‘Chairman,’ or ‘TOE.’ The exchange has divided social media users, with some defending Elumelu’s emphasis on traditional respect and others suggesting the incident reflects a clash between modern, informal corporate cultures and established social norms.

Following significant online backlash against the trainee, Ossai Ovie Success, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Delta State Governor, has offered her a support package. The offer includes ₦500,000 in cash, a VIP trip to the fourth Delta Social Media Summit in Asaba, five-star hotel accommodation, and an ambassadorial role for the summit. Ossai urged the public to stop the online harassment, noting that while a mistake was made, the trainee requires support rather than torment.
