Australian Socceroos midfielder Cristian Volpato is facing an uncertain international future after a secondary police test confirmed a positive result for cocaine. The 22-year-old, who plays for Sassuolo in Italy, was stopped by New South Wales Police on Sydney’s Anzac Bridge on July 24 for speeding. While Volpato underwent a private test that reportedly returned a negative result and maintains he did not knowingly ingest the substance, a secondary oral fluid sample taken by police confirmed the presence of cocaine. As a result, he was issued a $722 fine and a six-month suspension of his international driver’s license. Football Australia is currently seeking independent verification of the results to determine his availability for upcoming competitions.

Separately, Socceroos head coach Tony Popovic has addressed his contract status and recent team performance. Popovic revealed he turned down a four-year extension that would have seen him lead the team through the 2030 World Cup, opting instead for a short-term deal that runs until the end of the 2027 Asian Cup. He stated the decision was intended to allow Football Australia the opportunity to reassess its direction. Popovic also defended his tactical decisions during the team’s recent World Cup exit, emphasizing his commitment to evolving the squad by integrating younger players to build a long-term core for future tournaments.
