Tony Romo Placed on Indefinite Leave by CBS After Wisconsin OWI Arrest
Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and CBS lead NFL analyst Tony Romo was stopped on Interstate 43 southbound in Milwaukee on July 23, 2024. Police said he showed red, glassy eyes, an odor of alcohol and an open bottle of an alcoholic beverage in the passenger side of his Jeep. He performed poorly on standardized field‑sobriety tests and refused a preliminary breath test.
Romo was cited for operating while intoxicated (a first‑offense OWI fine of $1,066), unsafe passing ($235) and an open container ($267). A court appearance is scheduled for September 21, 2024.
CBS Sports announced that Romo is on indefinite leave “until further notice.” The network named former NFL defensive end J.J. Watt to join play‑by‑play announcer Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson on the top broadcast team during Romo’s absence. Romo remains under a 10‑year, $180 million contract that runs through the 2030 season.
