Tooro Kingdom King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV dies at 34

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the traditional monarch of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom, has died at the age of 34. The announcement was made by Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who described the passing as an “immeasurable loss” to the royal family and the nation.

King Oyo, who gained international recognition as the world’s youngest reigning monarch after ascending the throne at age three in 1995, died on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at approximately 10:00 p.m. While the kingdom has not officially disclosed the cause of death, reports indicate he had been receiving medical treatment in the United States for a serious illness, with some sources citing cancer.

The Tooro Kingdom has entered a period of traditional mourning, including the symbolic removal of royal regalia and the turning of the royal drum. To ensure continuity, the Prime Minister confirmed that a prince has been named as the heir, though his identity will be revealed at a later date in accordance with Babiito royal clan customs. Although Uganda is a republic, the Tooro Kingdom remains a significant cultural institution, ruling over more than two million people.
