Tooro Kingdom crowns Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as new King
Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, a 56-year-old former journalist and news anchor for the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation, has been crowned the new Omukama (King) of the Tooro Kingdom in Fort Portal. His installation follows a series of traditional rituals, including an overnight procession and a symbolic mock battle at the Karuziika Palace.
The coronation marks a transition following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV, who passed away in August 2026 at age 34 after a battle with cancer. Oyo’s reign, which began when he was just three years old, was marked by significant international visibility.
The succession has been marked by internal disputes within the royal family. The Babiito clan committee selected Nyabongo I, but the decision was contested by the late King’s mother, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, and Princess Ruth Komundale. They claimed that Oyo had a biological son and a will naming him as the rightful heir. However, the clan committee stated that the alleged heir was never presented to the elders and did not meet the traditional requirements for succession.
President Yoweri Museveni attended the ceremony and pledged support for the kingdom's cultural role. Nyabongo I has pledged to focus his reign on unity, economic development, and the preservation of Tooro’s cultural heritage. Alongside him, Rebecca Amoding-Rukidi has been introduced as the new Queen, though clan officials noted that her maternal background may impact the future succession eligibility of any children born to the couple.
