Tooro Kingdom crowns Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I amid succession dispute

Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, a former journalist and broadcaster for the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation, has been crowned the 15th Omukama of the Tooro Kingdom. The coronation ceremony took place at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal and was attended by President Yoweri Museveni, along with various government and cultural leaders.

The enthronement follows the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV in August 2026 at the age of 34. Nyabongo was selected by a 21-member Babiito royal clan succession committee from a pool of eligible princes.

The coronation is marked by an ongoing succession dispute. Several members of the late King Oyo’s immediate family, including his sister Princess Ruth Komuntale and Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, did not attend the ceremony. The Queen Mother has publicly challenged the selection, claiming that the late King left a will naming a different successor, specifically a young son whose identity remains undisclosed.

While the cultural monarchs of Uganda hold no formal constitutional power, they serve as significant custodians of tradition and identity. During the event, President Museveni urged traditional leaders to promote indigenous languages.
