The Tooro Kingdom in Uganda is facing a significant succession dispute following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV on August 27, 2026, while receiving cancer treatment in the United States. A 21-member committee from the Babiito royal clan has announced journalist and UBC editor Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the new monarch.

This decision is being contested by members of the late King’s immediate family, including Queen Mother Best Kemigisa and Princess Ruth Nsemere Komuntale. They claim King Oyo left a 2022 will designating a biological son as his rightful heir. The dispute has led to allegations from the Queen Mother that the royal family is under house arrest and that royal guards were withdrawn. However, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has denied these claims, stating that security has been reinforced around the palace to manage large crowds and address potential security threats from the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

King Oyo, who became the world’s youngest reigning monarch at age three in 1995, is scheduled to be buried at the Karambi Royal Tombs on Saturday. The burial will follow a national prayer service at St. John’s Cathedral. To ensure the sanctity of traditional rituals, public access to the royal tombs will be restricted during the ceremony.
