The Tooro Kingdom in Uganda is facing a succession dispute following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died of cancer at age 34. A 21-member committee from the Babiito royal clan has announced television journalist Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the new monarch. However, this decision is contested by members of the royal family, including the Queen Mother Best Kemigisa and Princess Ruth Nsemere Komuntale, who claim the late King left a will designating a biological son as his successor.

Amid the dispute, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has denied allegations from the Queen Mother that the royal family was placed under house arrest or that royal guards were withdrawn. The military stated that security was actually reinforced around the Karuziika Palace to manage large crowds and address potential security threats from the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

King Oyo, who was recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s youngest reigning monarch after ascending the throne at age three, is scheduled to be buried at the Karambi Royal Tombs. The burial will follow strict cultural protocols, including a national prayer service at St. John’s Cathedral. To honor his legacy, the Church of Uganda has announced plans to plant 20,000 trees.
