Tooro Kingdom faces succession crisis after death of King Oyo
The Tooro Kingdom in Uganda is facing a significant succession crisis following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. The 34-year-old monarch, who gained global recognition as the world’s youngest reigning king at age three, died in the United States after battling cancer.
During his burial at the Karambi Royal Tombs in Fort Portal, Babiito clan elders officially named Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a 56-year-old news anchor, as the successor. Kijanangoma performed the traditional ritual of casting nine coffee berries into the grave to signify the transfer of power. However, this decision is being fiercely contested by the late king’s immediate family.
Queen Mother Best Kemigisa and Princess Ruth Komuntale have rejected the appointment, citing a 2022 will that reportedly names the late king’s biological son as the rightful heir. The identity of this son has not been publicly disclosed. The Queen Mother has raised concerns regarding the restriction of the royal family’s movement, describing the presence of soldiers at the palace as a form of ‘house arrest.’
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and religious leaders have called for peaceful and lawful resolutions to the dispute, urging the kingdom to prioritize unity. Amidst the tension, a proposal has also emerged to establish a 500 million UGX appreciation fund for the Omusuuga, Charles Kamurasi Akiiki, to recognize his service during the transition.
