Tooro Kingdom leader asserts authority amid succession dispute

Charles Mukarasi, known as the Omusuuga of Tooro, has asserted his authority over the Tooro Kingdom following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV. Speaking at the Uganda Media Center, Mukarasi stated that he has assumed the powers of the Kingdom in accordance with Babiito laws and traditions and is currently in charge, though he noted he will surrender these powers when the time comes.

During the press briefing, Mukarasi also challenged the authority of the Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomire, regarding the announcement of royal births. He argued that such matters must follow established cultural procedures involving the royal family and designated leaders rather than being announced by the Prime Minister. Mukarasi cited historical precedents of how royal children were traditionally handled to emphasize the importance of adhering to these cultural protocols during the current succession transition.
