Tooro Kingdom names new king following death of King Oyo

The Tooro Kingdom in Uganda has entered a new era following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. The King, who had reigned for 31 years, passed away at the age of 34 in a German hospital after a period of illness.

A 21-member committee from the Babiito clan has selected 56-year-old Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a journalist for the national broadcaster, as the new king. Kijanangoma ascended to the throne through traditional rituals, including a 4-kilometer procession to the Karuziika Royal Palace. His appointment marks a shift in the throne to a different branch of the royal lineage.

The succession process follows reports that the late King Oyo had expressed wishes in his will for his young son to succeed him. While Queen Best Kemigisa advocated for following the King's wishes, the committee proceeded with the selection of Kijanangoma. The committee's initial choice, Prince George Desmond Kamurasi, reportedly declined the throne due to other responsibilities.
