Tooro Kingdom cleared to prepare for Prince Kijanangoma coronation
Ugandan Attorney General Sam Mayanja has cleared the Tooro Kingdom to proceed with coronation preparations for Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma. The decision follows the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who passed away from cancer at age 34. While the kingdom’s Supreme Council endorsed Prince Kijanangoma as the successor, the process has faced internal friction.
Prior to the current designation, Prince George Desmond Kamurasi, a London-based individual, was identified as a preferred candidate by the Royal Succession Committee. However, Kamurasi reportedly requested an audit of kingdom assets and more time for family consultation before accepting the throne.
The succession has also drawn criticism from the late King’s mother, Best Kemigisa, who accused the clan representatives of naming a successor prematurely and disregarding the late King’s will. Despite these disputes, Mayanja clarified that no formal legal challenge has been filed in court to halt the coronation, which is currently scheduled for September 29, 2026, at Karuziika Palace.
