Tooro Kingdom succession dispute intensifies over alleged heir

A succession dispute has emerged in the Tooro Kingdom following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV on August 27, 2026. While Tooro Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki and President Yoweri Museveni previously indicated that the late monarch left behind a prince to succeed him, the head of the Babiito royal clan, Chief Prince Charles Kamurasi Akiiki, has disputed these reports.

Kamurasi stated that the royal clan has no knowledge of any biological child belonging to the late king. This contradicts claims from palace sources suggesting an alleged heir exists. Reports indicate an underground campaign is underway to convince the Babiito royals to accept a child, whose mother is described as being of Rwandese origin, as the successor.

Legal and cultural complexities remain, as establishing biological paternity does not automatically guarantee the right to the throne. The Babiito clan, which holds authority over matters of royal lineage and succession, continues to face pressure regarding the legitimacy and cultural requirements of the potential heir.
