Toowoomba driver fined $1,104 for buttering a bagel while driving
A 29-year-old provisional driver in Toowoomba, west of Brisbane, was fined more than $1,100 after being caught driving while attempting to butter a bagel. Police reported that the motorist was using his knees to steer his silver Honda HR-V while preparing the snack on a busy street.
In addition to the distracted driving charge, officers discovered the vehicle's registration had expired three days prior. The driver was issued infringement notices for driving without due care and attention and driving an unregistered vehicle, resulting in a $1,104 fine and the loss of three demerit points.
Acting Superintendent Kelly Hanlen released body camera footage of the incident, warning motorists that no meal or distraction is worth risking the safety of others. The driver reportedly told officers that he was hungry after working since the morning.
