Topolobampo ammonia plant faces protests and technical review

Protests against the construction of an ammonia and fertilizer plant in Topolobampo, Sinaloa, have intensified. Greenpeace México and the ¡Aquí No! collective recently deployed a 30-meter banner to protest the project led by Gas y Petroquímica de Occidente (GPO), a subsidiary of Grupo Proman. The demonstration coincided with the approaching 100-day mark of a peaceful sit-in by Mayo-Yoreme indigenous communities and local fishers from Bahía de Ohuira.

Protesters are calling on President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo to intervene and cancel the project to protect the ecological, cultural, and social integrity of the Bahía de Ohuira. Concerns have been raised regarding industrial infrastructure, including a massive absorption tower weighing over 300 tons.

In response to the ongoing tension, the project is entering a new phase of technical dialogue. Specialized technical tables will be established to review environmental studies, water management, and the impact on the bay. These sessions will include experts proposed by the Mexican government, the ¡Aquí No! collective, and Proman to evaluate scientific data and seek viable solutions.
