Earthquake relief efforts intensify in Colombia and Venezuela

Following a series of devastating earthquakes, rescue efforts are intensifying across Colombia and Venezuela. In Venezuela, official reports indicate the death toll has risen to 6,438, with over 6,400 people rescued and more than 86,000 individuals receiving medical treatment. Authorities have inspected over 59,000 homes, identifying thousands of structures as high-risk or uninhabitable.

In Colombia, the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) has urged local leaders to halt debris removal in areas where survivors might still be trapped. To assist in the search, officials are utilizing high-resolution satellite imagery provided by NASA and Airbus to map destruction and plan access routes.

The deployment of international aid has sparked debate. The Mexican volunteer rescue group Topos Azteca, which recently assisted in Venezuela, has arrived in Cali, Colombia, to aid search operations. While Colombian legislator Esteban Oliveros defended their presence, noting the importance of international expertise, the group's arrival followed initial government restrictions aimed at prioritizing domestic rescue teams.
