Topsoe and BPCL partner for sustainable aviation fuel project in India
Topsoe and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) have entered into a technology licensing agreement to support sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production in India. Under the deal, Topsoe will provide its kerosene hydrotreating technology to BPCL’s Mumbai Refinery.
BPCL plans to revamp its existing kerosene hydrotreater unit, which has a capacity of 4,000 metric tonnes per day. The upgraded facility will co-process 5% renewable feedstock, specifically derived from used cooking oil, alongside conventional feedstock. This approach allows BPCL to produce SAF using its current refinery infrastructure, avoiding the need for a new, dedicated production unit.
The project is already underway following a final investment decision, with commissioning expected by the end of 2026. Once operational, the facility will supply SAF to airlines refueling international passenger flights at Indian airports. This initiative supports India’s efforts to meet domestic SAF blending targets and prepare for compliance with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).
