Topuklu Yaylası pursued as Turkey’s first Dark Sky Park to spark Denizli astrotourism

Prof. Dr. Serkan Bertan evaluated data from the "Ethem Hoca with Sky Observation" events held in 2022‑2025 at Topuklu Yaylası in Beyağaç, Denizli. His study found that the site meets international criteria for a Dark Sky Park, which could make it Turkey’s first officially recognised dark‑sky reserve and position Denizli as a regional astrotourism hub.

Visitors were predominantly adults over 18, many holding university degrees, with about half attending for the first time. Participants described the star‑gazing activities as a distinct tourism experience and expressed strong support for expanding astrotourism, noting its positive impact on the local economy and rural development.

The report proposes concrete steps to achieve Dark Sky Park status, including planning dedicated observation zones, building a fully equipped observatory and management centre, restricting vehicle access, adding medical facilities, parking, trails, camping and glamping areas, improving sanitation infrastructure, and creating an international website for promotion.
