Toquilla River flooding affects 25 homes in Quinindé

Heavy rainfall on Saturday, September 26, caused the Toquilla River to overflow, flooding approximately 25 homes in the San Antonio neighborhood of the La Unión parish, located in the Quinindé canton of Esmeraldas.

The flooding occurred rapidly, with water entering homes in less than an hour. Residents reported that water levels reached between ankle and knee height in various areas, damaging furniture, appliances, and commercial goods. The overflow of the river and nearby streams also submerged streets and roads, making travel difficult for cars, motorcycles, and mototaxis.

Local residents noted that existing drainage systems and sewers were unable to handle the volume of water. Community members have requested that the Municipality of Quinindé provide machinery to clean, expand, and deepen ditches and drainage channels to prevent future occurrences.
