Tor Project releases Tor Browser 16.0

The Tor Project has launched Tor Browser 16.0 for desktop and Android platforms. This release is the first stable version based on Firefox ESR 153 and follows an annual audit that addressed over 270 issues to ensure privacy and security.

Key updates include a complete redesign of the Settings interface, which replaces the former “General” section with specific categories for Appearance, Downloads, Tabs and browsing, Accessibility, and Languages. To enhance privacy, certain settings that could increase user fingerprinting are now hidden or accompanied by clear warnings.

A new optional feature aims to prevent local applications from identifying visited websites by masking window titles, displaying only “Tor Browser” instead of specific page names. Additionally, the browser now provides native support for ARM64 Linux systems, such as Raspberry Pi and Linux running on Apple Silicon, while ending support for 32-bit x86 Linux systems.
