Toraja fires destroy forest, homes, and traditional burial sites

A series of fires in the Toraja region of Indonesia has caused significant damage to forests, residential property, and cultural heritage sites. In Baruppu’ North Toraja, a forest fire destroyed dozens of traditional Torajan burial caves (liang) and hundreds of coffins. Local officials have reported the incident to the police to investigate whether the fire was intentional.

In Tana Toraja, a residential fire in Lembang Rumandan, Rano, destroyed a home, causing material losses estimated in the hundreds of millions of rupiah. The fire is suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit.

Regional legislators have expressed concern over the increasing frequency of forest and land fires caused by dry weather, noting that over 400 hectares of forest have burned. Officials have highlighted a critical shortage of firefighting equipment, with Tana Toraja currently operating only three fire engines, prompting calls for increased government funding for new vehicles and protective gear.
