Torbay and South Devon NHS begins SABR prostate cancer therapy

Men in Torbay and South Devon diagnosed with early-stage localised prostate cancer are now being offered Stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR). This targeted, high-dose treatment is designed to manage the condition by reducing the risk of cancer spreading or returning.

SABR is typically delivered in five doses, or fractions, over a two-week period. This is a significant reduction compared to the 20 doses required for standard external beam radiotherapy. Stephen Dwyer-Lapthorne has become the first patient in the Torbay and South Devon region to receive the treatment following his diagnosis in October 2025.

Following approval by NHS England in June, the national rollout of SABR aims to provide more patients with low or intermediate risk of prostate cancer access to the therapy. The Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust noted that providing the treatment locally allows patients to receive care closer to home without the need for extensive travel.
