Torino approves multifunctional complex including large mosque at former Nebiolo foundries

The city of Torino has authorized a project to transform the former Nebiolo foundries in the Aurora district into a multifunctional complex. The project, led by the Italian Islamic Confederation (CII), includes a mosque capable of hosting approximately 1,000 worshippers with a 20-meter minaret.

According to the developers, roughly 80% of the site will be dedicated to non-religious uses, including a student dormitory with subsidized housing, a library, study rooms, and spaces for cultural activities and interreligious dialogue. The construction is expected to begin by the end of 2026 and will cost approximately 15 to 17 million euros, with some funding reportedly coming from the Moroccan government.

The announcement has sparked significant political debate. Torino Mayor Stefano Lo Russo supports the initiative as part of a broader urban regeneration plan for the industrial site. However, regional and local opposition leaders, including Piedmont Vice President Maurizio Marrone and members of Fratelli d’Italia, have criticized the project. Opponents have raised concerns regarding social tension and the potential for “wild Islamization” in the Aurora neighborhood. Marrone has proposed legislative amendments to establish minimum distances between different religious buildings to potentially obstruct the development.
