Chile tornado and storms cause widespread damage in central regions
A powerful EF-2 tornado, with wind speeds reaching up to 218 km/h, struck the commune of Requínoa in Chile's O’Higgins region on Monday, October 26. The phenomenon caused significant destruction, including damage to at least 85 homes and the Colegio Tricahue, where the gymnasium suffered near-total destruction. Local authorities reported that the tornado also damaged electrical infrastructure, including 28 power poles, and displaced heavy containers.
In the Santiago Metropolitan Region, intense rainfall and hail triggered the overflow of the Quebrada Honda in Las Condes, leading to mudslides and flooding in residential areas. Emergency response efforts have been deployed across the central-south zone, with Senapred reporting multiple people displaced and several educational institutions damaged in the O’Higgins and Maule regions.
Government ministers, including the Ministers of Housing and Social Development, have arrived in the affected areas to coordinate aid. Plans are underway to utilize housing improvement subsidies and the Basic Emergency Form (FIBE) to assist families with significant structural damage to roofs and walls.
