Toroa chicks take flight from Taiaroa Head breeding colony

The first toroa, or northern royal albatross, chicks of the season have successfully fledged from the breeding colony at Taiaroa Head near Dunedin. This site serves as the only mainland breeding location for the species in the world.

One notable chick, Āwheo, has also taken flight. Āwheo has gained international attention through a 24-hour Royal Cam livestream that has been active for ten years. The young birds, which possess wingspans of up to three metres, are expected to spend approximately five years at sea, circumnavigating the globe and traveling as far as the Humboldt Current off the coast of Chile before returning to breed.

The Department of Conservation (DOC) co-manages the colony alongside Te Poari a Pukekura, Te Rūnanga o Ōtākou, Korako Karetai Trust, and the Dunedin City Council. Following a record season where 38 chicks fledged, conservationists are monitoring the remaining chicks as they prepare for their long-distance journeys across the Pacific Ocean.
