Toronto Blue Jays rally with returning pitchers as injuries thin
The 2026 Toronto Blue Jays entered the season with high expectations after a World Series appearance, but a 32‑35 record and a lengthy injury list have left the team struggling. Key absences have included catcher Alejandro Kirk, outfielder George Springer, and several starters such as Dylan Cease and Max Scherzer. In early June, both Cease and Scherzer returned to the rotation for a series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Cease struck out 11 in six innings, and Scherzer took the mound the following day, providing much‑needed depth to a rotation that had been reduced to three starters.
Manager John Schneider also shifted Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to the leadoff spot for the walk‑off win over the Phillies, a 3‑2 victory that lifted the Jays to 33‑35. The team hopes that the returning pitchers, along with upcoming activations of Kirk, Shane Bieber and others, will move them back into playoff contention as the AL East tightens.
While the roster is still healing and offensive production remains below last season’s levels, the Blue Jays now have a five‑man rotation and a healthier bullpen, giving them a realistic chance to climb above .500 in the coming weeks.
