Toronto City Council Honors Srebrenica Genocide Victims with Symbolic Flower

At the 43rd meeting of Toronto’s City Council, all 25 councilors and deputy mayor Olivia Chow wore the Srebrenica flower on their lapels to mark the July 11 remembrance day for the Srebrenica genocide. Chow delivered a historic lesson on the genocide, emphasizing that truth and memory must endure. The council reaffirmed Toronto’s commitment to memorialising the victims, supporting plans for a permanent monument, a street name and inclusion of Srebrenica content in school curricula across Canada.

The gesture underscores the city’s role in Canada’s broader effort to keep the memory of the Srebrenica atrocities alive and to promote education and reconciliation.
