Toronto FC defeats New York Red Bulls to stay in MLS playoff race
Toronto FC secured a 2-0 away victory against the New York Red Bulls in Harrison, New Jersey, keeping their hopes alive for an MLS Eastern Conference playoff spot. The win marks Toronto’s first away victory at the Red Bulls in 10 years.
An own goal by New York’s Justin Che in the third minute gave Toronto an early lead, and substitute Dániel Sallói doubled the advantage in the 82nd minute. Despite facing heavy pressure—with New York controlling 67 per cent of possession and outshooting Toronto 15-6—Toronto goalkeeper Luka Gavran recorded a shutout with three saves.
The victory comes during a successful week for Toronto, who earned seven of nine possible points following a win against CF Montréal and a 3-3 draw with Orlando City. The team achieved this result despite being shorthanded; head coach Robin Fraser was serving a suspension, and players Richie Laryea and Benjamin Kuscevic were sidelined due to yellow-card accumulation.
Toronto FC is now level on points with the Red Bulls and FC Cincinnati for the final Eastern Conference playoff position, though they trail both in the tiebreaker of total wins. The club faces the Columbus Crew next Saturday.
