Elon Musk documentary to debut at Toronto International Film Festival

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) announced its 2026 documentary slate, featuring 21 titles from 20 countries and 18 world premieres. The program will open with "Rapinoe," a film about U.S. soccer star Megan Rapinoe, and includes a range of socially and politically themed works such as "Edward Said: Between Worlds" and "Re/Pair."

A centerpiece of the lineup is Alex Gibney’s nearly four‑hour documentary "Musk," which probes the life and influence of billionaire Elon Musk. TIFF documentary programmer Thom Powers said the film is “extremely important” because Musk’s activities touch many aspects of daily life worldwide. Musk previously called the project a “hit piece,” but the festival is confident in Gibney’s journalistic approach. The film will premiere at TIFF after an earlier Venice screening and is slated for a theatrical release on October 16, followed by a broadcast on HBO.

The announcement also notes a record number of animated titles in the Centrepiece program, but the focus of media coverage centers on the high‑profile Musk documentary and its potential cultural impact.
