Toronto International Film Festival begins 51st edition

The 51st Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has commenced, featuring nearly 300 films from around the globe. The festival includes the debut of ‘TIFF: The Market,’ a new professional marketplace designed to connect filmmakers with financiers and distributors.

Key highlights include the opening night biopic ‘Being Heumann,’ which follows disability rights activist Judy Heumann, and the highly anticipated ‘I Play Rocky,’ a film about the early life of Sylvester Stallone. Other notable titles include the documentary ‘Always Lalisa’ featuring K-pop star Lisa, and the Palme d’Or winner ‘Fjord.’

The event arrives amid discussions regarding geopolitical shifts in the film industry, including trade tensions between Canada and the United States. While the festival remains a major hub for international talent, organizers are focusing on attracting younger audiences through independent cinema and diverse programming.

In addition to screenings, the festival features public events like Festival Street on King Street and the Rogers Red Carpet in Yorkville, offering free outdoor screenings and live music. The festival also sees increased industry presence, with over 6,000 market delegates expected this year.
