Toronto International Film Festival hosts premieres of new documentaries

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is hosting the world premieres of two significant documentaries.

“The Ultra Runner,” directed by Mila Aung-Thwin, follows the journey of Romanian ultramarathoner Tibi Ușeriu. The film explores Ușeriu’s transition from a life in the criminal underworld and a high-security prison to becoming a national hero in Romania through endurance running. The documentary examines his mental struggle for survival and his experiences escaping communist Romania.

Additionally, the documentary “Black Sunflowers,” directed by James Marcus Haney and executive produced by Sean Penn, premieres at the festival. Set in Ukraine, the film provides a portrait of Ukrainian youth navigating life amidst the Russian invasion. It depicts the intersection of civilian life—including street racing and underground clubs—with the harsh realities of martial law and frontline service.
