Toronto International Film Festival opens with ‘Being Heumann’

The 51st Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) opened with the premiere of ‘Being Heumann’, a biopic directed by Siân Heder. The film tells the story of Judy Heumann, a prominent American disability rights activist who led a historic 28-day sit-in in 1977 to advocate for equal rights, eventually paving the way for the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Ruth Madeley stars as Heumann, and the production features a cast of actors with disabilities. Heder, who previously directed the Oscar-winning ‘CODA’, noted the importance of casting and the film’s message regarding collective action in an era where many feel left behind. The film has already secured a deal with Apple TV and is expected to be a significant contender in the upcoming awards season.

The festival features nearly 300 international productions through September 20, including works starring Helen Mirren, Cynthia Erivo, and German actress Nina Hoss.
