Toronto International Film Festival 2026 begins with new Oscar eligibility rules

The 51st Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is set to take place from September 10 to 20, 2026, featuring 294 films from around the world. A significant new rule for the Platform program now grants winners direct eligibility for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, provided the film is primarily in a non-English language.

Notable international entries include the Brazilian film ‘Vicentina Pede Desculpas’ by Gabriel Martins, which is competing in the Platform section, and several Italian productions such as Nanni Moretti’s ‘Succederà questa notte’. Canadian cinema is also well-represented, with 61 features and shorts programmed, including David Bezmozgis’s ‘The Betrayers’, which explores geopolitical themes involving Ukraine and Israel.

To enhance the festival experience, presenting partner Rogers Communications is bringing red carpet events back to Yorkville. The area will host live musical performances, free outdoor screenings of past People’s Choice Award winners, and interactive fan experiences. The city's dining scene is also participating with various film-inspired menus and themed culinary experiences.
