Toronto Maple Leafs acquire Kirill Marchenko in blockbuster trade
The Toronto Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets have completed a significant trade involving Kirill Marchenko and Matthew Knies. In the deal, Toronto acquired Marchenko, Miles Wood, and Elvis Merzlikins in exchange for Knies, Emil Andrae, Steven Lorentz, and a 2027 second-round pick.
Maple Leafs General Manager John Chayka stated that Marchenko was a deliberate target intended to provide offensive versatility and the ability to dictate play. Marchenko, who has scored at least 20 goals in each of his four NHL seasons, had previously indicated he would not sign an extension with Columbus.
Matthew Knies, who recently signed a six-year extension with Toronto, expressed feeling “shocked” and “upset” regarding the trade. Despite the emotional difficulty of leaving his teammates, Knies has had a strong start in Columbus, recording four points in his first two games with the Blue Jackets.
