Toronto Maple Leafs adjust defensive strategy amid early season struggles
The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing defensive challenges early in the season, currently holding a 20th-ranked goals-against average of 3.14. Following a 5-4 loss to the Utah Mammoth, head coach Jim Hiller has experimented with roster compositions, including dressing 11 forwards and seven defencemen.
To address defensive inconsistencies, Hiller has begun adjusting player pairings. This includes moving veteran Morgan Rielly to a third pairing, where he saw reduced ice time during the recent loss to Utah. Other potential solutions include looking toward internal prospects like Ben Danford, a young defender currently sidelined with a minor injury who has shown progress with the Toronto Marlies.
While the team has demonstrated resilience by attempting comebacks after early deficits, analysts note that turnovers and an inability to defend against transition rushes remain significant concerns for the squad.
