Toronto Maple Leafs appoint Andy O'Brien as VP of Sport Performance

The Toronto Maple Leafs have hired Andy O'Brien as vice‑president of sport performance. O'Brien, a 48‑year‑old former trainer of Sidney Crosby and former director of sports science for the Pittsburgh Penguins (2015‑2021), will oversee strength and conditioning, sport science, nutrition, injury rehabilitation and mental performance for the NHL club. He previously consulted for the Florida Panthers and was part of four Stanley Cup‑winning teams (2016, 2017, 2024, 2025).

General manager John Chayka said O'Brien’s “record as an innovator and winner” aligns with the organization’s commitment to player care. O'Brien will lead a new staff that includes Dr. Craig Slaunwhite, strength‑and‑conditioning coach Jason Martin, assistant coach Josh Crouse and human‑performance consultant Dr. Jordan Shallow. The hire follows Chayka’s broader overhaul of the front office after the Leafs missed the playoffs and dealt with injuries to Auston Matthews and goaltender Anthony Stolarz.
