Toronto Maple Leafs appoint Jim Hiller as 41st head coach

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced the hiring of Jim Hiller, 57, as the franchise’s 41st head coach, ending a prolonged search for a permanent leader.

Hiller previously served as an assistant coach under Mike Babcock from 2015‑2019, overseeing the power play and working with stars Auston Matthews, William Nylander and Mitch Marner. He also co‑founded the analytics firm TruPerformance, bringing a data‑driven approach to coaching.

General manager John Chayka said Hiller’s preparation, plan and deep knowledge of the Toronto market convinced him, highlighting the coach’s philosophy that “hockey must be fun” and an emphasis on skating and player development.

The move aims to reset a disappointing season and give the team’s young core, including Matthews, Nylander and emerging players, a clear direction under the new leadership.
