Toronto Maple Leafs add veteran Claude Giroux, spotlight top prospects

The Toronto Maple Leafs are reported to be pursuing free‑agent forward Claude Giroux. The 39‑year‑old, who posted 14 goals and 49 points with the Ottawa Senators last season, is said to be a candidate for what could be his final NHL year. The Leafs are one of three teams still in contention for his signature.

Assistant general manager Hayley Wickenheiser identified the club’s most‑improved prospect as 2025 fifth‑round pick Harry Nansi, noting his physical gifts and a jump to 56 points in his last OHL season.

The organization’s prospect pool also features first‑overall 2026 draft pick Gavin McKenna, goalie Artur Akhtyamov, defenseman Ben Danford and forward Jacob Quillan, among others, as outlined after the development camp concluded.

General manager John Chayka’s recent moves have drawn strong praise; Toronto sports commentator Sid Seixeiro said Chayka “annihilated” the former front office with his roster decisions, underscoring a broader shift in the team’s direction.
