Toronto Maple Leafs' Gavin McKenna Defers No. 72 to New Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky

At a development camp press conference, Toronto Maple Leafs forward Gavin McKenna was asked if he would wear jersey No. 72 for his rookie season. He replied that he would probably not, saying the two‑time Stanley Cup champion Sergei Bobrovsky, who was just signed to a three‑year, $7 million contract, could keep the number if he wants it.

McKenna noted that his backup numbers 9 and 27 are already retired for franchise legends, so he would need to find another available number. The goaltending acquisition is part of General Manager John Chayka’s first free‑agency moves, aiming to bolster the Leafs after they finished last in the Atlantic Division and missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade.
