Toronto Maple Leafs hire Sidney Crosby’s longtime trainer Andy O’Brien

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced the hiring of Andy O’Brien as their new strength and conditioning coach. O’Brien is best known for serving as the personal trainer of Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby for many years, helping the future Hall of Famer maintain his longevity in the NHL.

Before joining Toronto, O’Brien worked with the Florida Panthers, the WHL’s Tri‑City Americans, and spent five years as the director of conditioning and sports science for the Penguins. His appointment also reunites him with former Toronto staffer Hayley Wickenheiser, who left the organization earlier in the offseason. The move comes as Crosby and teammate Evgeni Malkin each have one season remaining on their contracts, signaling a period of transition for the Penguins.

The hiring is viewed as a significant addition to the Maple Leafs’ leadership staff as the team seeks to strengthen its player development and performance programs.
