Gavin McKenna draws attention in Toronto Maple Leafs preseason debut

Gavin McKenna, the 2026 No. 1 overall pick, has drawn significant attention following a dominant preseason performance with the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 6-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators. Analysts and coaching staff highlighted his high hockey IQ, skill, and escapability during the game.

As a teenage phenom entering a major hockey market, McKenna faces high expectations. To assist with his transition, he is currently living with veteran center John Tavares and his family. He joins a core roster that includes Auston Matthews and William Nylander.

Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs' roster outlook remains a topic of discussion. Forward Matthew Knies, coming off a career year with 66 points, is considered a valuable asset due to his age and team-friendly contract. While the team is not currently shopping Knies, his availability could become a factor if the team enters a seller mode during the season.
