Toronto Maple Leafs weigh trade deals and coaching candidates

Insider reports say the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens reached a trade agreement for forward Matthew Knies at the March deadline, but the paperwork was not filed before the 3 p.m. ET cutoff. The proposed return for Toronto included prospect Alexander Zharovsky and two first‑round picks. Canadiens GM Kent Hughes indicated the move may be revisited in the summer.

General manager John Chayka, who took over after firing head coach Craig Berube, is interviewing several coaching prospects. Names mentioned include former New York Islanders coach Patrick Roy, former Rangers coach Peter Laviolette, and other candidates such as Dallas Eakins. Chayka says the search will be narrowed after a week of interviews.

Separately, defenseman Morgan Rielly has reportedly softened his no‑movement‑clause stance, opening the door for a trade. Suggested destinations are the San Jose Sharks, Vancouver Canucks, Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks, each offering a mix of cap space, playing time and team needs.
