Toronto police charge man for alleged assault at anti-Israel protest
Martin Salgatar, a 20-year-old from Mississauga, has surrendered to police following an alleged assault during a pro-Palestine demonstration in Toronto on October 10.
The Toronto Police Service’s hate crime unit alleges that Salgatar attacked a victim from behind near Yonge and Grosvenor Streets without provocation. According to police, the blows knocked the victim to the ground, resulting in injuries to his face and leg.
Social media video footage of the incident appeared to show the attacker striking the victim and pulling him to the sidewalk. The footage also showed other protesters berating the victim while he was on the ground. Salgatar turned himself in after his face was identified in screenshots circulating online and was scheduled to appear at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre.
