Toronto police investigate assault outside Chinese Consulate
On September 22, 2026, an unidentified man wearing a jacket with the Chinese flag insignia allegedly attacked Falun Gong practitioners outside the Chinese Consulate General in Toronto. Witnesses and video footage indicate the man destroyed banners and display boards, shoved practitioners, and kicked a person filming the incident. One female practitioner reported sustaining a facial injury and receiving death threats, including claims that she would be “shot.”
The man reportedly claimed the public sidewalk was “Chinese territory” and cited the Chinese Anti-Secession Law during the confrontation. Toronto Police confirmed they are investigating the incident, which involved property damage, physical assault, and threats.
In response, a group of Hong Kong activists in Toronto issued a joint statement condemning the violence and demanding a full criminal investigation. They urged police to determine if the individual acted under the direction of a foreign government or political organization. Former Canadian Member of Parliament Wladyslaw Lizon and academic Dr. Maria Cheung also called for a swift investigation, emphasizing the need to address potential foreign interference and ensure public safety under Canadian law.
