Toronto Public Health investigates Legionnaires’ disease outbreak

Toronto Public Health is investigating an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease involving six confirmed cases. The cases are concentrated within a one-kilometre radius of the intersection of Bathurst and Dupont streets, affecting individuals who live, work, or visited the area between July 2 and July 26.

Officials are working to determine if the outbreak is linked to a previous occurrence of five cases at Castleview Wychwood Towers, a local long-term care home. While the specific source of infection has not been confirmed, health officials have identified possible sites, implemented precautionary control measures, and are conducting environmental sampling and on-site inspections.

Legionnaires’ disease is a serious respiratory illness caused by Legionella bacteria, which can be found in natural water sources or man-made systems like cooling towers, hot tubs, and humidifiers. Symptoms include fever, cough, muscle pain, and pneumonia. The disease is not spread from person to person, and officials state the current risk to the general public remains low.
