Toronto Tempo: WNBA's first Canadian franchise featured in ESPN series

The Toronto Tempo, the WNBA’s first Canadian franchise, is the subject of a new four-part ESPN Original Series titled ‘Setting the Tempo’. The documentary, directed by Kathleen Jayme, chronicles the high-stakes process of building the professional basketball franchise from the ground up, focusing on the leadership of team president Teresa Resch, head coach Sandy Brondello, and general manager Monica Wright Rogers.

The series follows the team's rapid development, including talent evaluation and roster assembly, featuring players such as Marina Mabrey, Brittney Sykes, Kia Nurse, and Kiki Rice. The documentary is scheduled to premiere on September 20, streaming on the ESPN App and Disney+, with linear broadcasts on ESPN and TSN.

In their inaugural 2026 season, the Tempo faced significant challenges. Despite a strong start that saw them as one of the league's top scoring teams, the franchise finished with an 11-29 record. Injuries and the difficulties of an expansion season ultimately led to their elimination from playoff contention on August 19.
