Toronto transit faces congestion and equity challenges
Public transit in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is facing significant pressure due to rapid population growth and high congestion levels. Toronto was recently rated as the most congested city in North America, with commuters losing substantial time in traffic. To address these issues, major infrastructure projects like the Ontario Line are underway. The planned 15-station subway line aims to reduce travel times from 70 minutes to 30 minutes and is expected to reduce daily car trips by 28,000.
However, transit planning faces criticism regarding equity for newcomers and immigrants in suburban areas. Research indicates that immigrants and temporary residents rely on public transit at significantly higher rates than Canadian-born residents. In cities like Brampton, Mississauga, and Toronto, there are notable gaps between immigrant-dense neighborhoods and the availability of reliable transportation to essential services, jobs, and healthcare. As municipal elections approach, the adequacy of transit networks to serve these high-dependency populations remains a critical issue.
