Torrance Unified School District classrooms lack air conditioning during heat wave
Approximately 75% of classrooms within the Torrance Unified School District lack air conditioning, causing significant discomfort for students and staff during recent extreme heat in Southern California. Many of the district’s 31 schools were constructed in the 1960s and are not equipped to handle high temperatures.
To mitigate the heat, the district has established cooling zones, hydration stations, and provided additional ice and slushees. Officials are also considering the possibility of canceling classes during periods of excessive heat.
Long-term solutions are being explored, including research into a potential bond measure to fund infrastructure improvements such as air conditioning units and solar panels. A previous $520 million bond proposal intended to fund air conditioning failed to reach the ballot.
